The origin of the United Earth initiative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Worried Earthlings (WE)<\/a> is the growing global collective behind the United Earth initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing on the work of generations of thinkers, WE outlined an analysis of humanity’s geopolitical condition, a vision of a democratic global system and a proposed method for building it. These ideas were developed into United Earth: Why \u2013 What \u2013 How<\/a>, and the initial organisational and digital infrastructure was built to begin putting the proposal into practice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The work is motivated by a fundamental concern: humanity faces global threats that our fragmented geopolitical system is unable to address adequately. We need to develop a way to govern our shared world democratically, making it possible to build a peaceful, ecologically sustainable and socially just civilisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Earth is WE’s invitation to humanity to undertake this task together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Knowledge, judgement and authority<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

WE does not present itself through names or personal profiles, because we believe ideas should be evaluated on their merits, not through the identities or personal authority of those presenting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This does not mean rejecting authority as such. We all learn from people whose knowledge, experience and wisdom we respect. We may also hold religious or philosophical convictions that recognise higher authorities in our own lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But authorities that some people recognise and others do not cannot serve as a common basis for political governance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Decisions that bind us all must be developed and justified through knowledge, sound arguments, ethical principles and democratic processes in which everyone can participate on equal terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A genuine democracy therefore depends on people willing to exercise their own judgement, critically examine competing ideas and take responsibility for their collective decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also a fundamental principle of the geopolitical system WE proposes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The handover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Worried Earthlings (WE) offered the first outline of the ideas behind United Earth. A facilitator took on the task of developing them into a full proposal, building the initial digital infrastructure and taking the formal steps needed to launch the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next step is to place this work under permanent, independent stewardship. The United Earth Foundation<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> will safeguard and develop the initiative’s intellectual property and digital infrastructure, operate AGORA and facilitate the growth of the proto-organisation until democratically established institutions can take over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first funding priority is to secure the united.earth domain<\/a> for our common undertaking. The subsequent Foundation campaign will also provide for a limited, one-time financial settlement for the facilitator’s development work and associated rights, without continuing royalties or special privileges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The original WE’s task as initiator is complete, and it will have no continuing role as a separate group. The facilitator may continue to contribute on the same terms as others. Neither claims special authority over the future development of United Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The role of the first facilitators is also the role of the organisation being built: to enable humanity to develop its own democratic institutions. United Earth will bring together volunteers and professionals whose responsibility is to facilitate this process, rather than claim political authority on humanity’s behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither the original WE nor the facilitators are <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>the protagonists of this story. Humanity is.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

WE? Isn’t that us?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes. That is what WE is meant to become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No individual, organisation, government or small group can establish legitimate global democracy on humanity’s behalf. We must do this ourselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WE has offered a starting point. What happens next depends on people everywhere choosing to examine, challenge, improve and develop it together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

If United Earth succeeds, it will be because an extraordinary number of people have made an extraordinary collective effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
