We are gathering today in a large number of cities around the world, people of all ages, from all ethnic backgrounds and faiths, to declare our intention to establish a global parliament. This should be a democratic arena where all citizens of the world can contribute their experiences, needs and ambitions to politics and governance on a global level.
The clear challenges from a lack of global governance are manifested in extreme economic inequalities, the impossibility of tackling common climate and environmental threats, and the growing danger of conflicts that may involve weapons of mass destruction. A global parliament with broad representation from humanity is needed to create legitimate and effective solutions to these problems: harmonise current power blocs into a balanced system, and build capacity to deal with climate and environmental crises.
By establishing this parliament, we commit to reviving the concept of the commons and introducing a new economic system that emphasizes sustainability, justice and shared management of our natural resources. We propose a transition to a rights-based framework, which safeguards our planet’s value and ensures all individuals’ economic rights, access to basic needs, as well as opportunities for education and information.
We call on the world’s nation states to take an innovative role in enabling this crucial next step in our collective political evolution, designed to transcend old boundaries of sovereignty, prioritising the collective welfare of humanity and our planet. By embracing this paradigm, we affirm our commitment to a just and sustainable geopolitical system, where the new role of governance is to protect cultural diversity and responsibly manage society’s and nature’s resources.
This initiative represents not only a political development but a vital necessity for our existence, and a way to meet the critical challenges of our time and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
