The name United Earth
We chose the name both for the envisioned geopolitical system and for the organisation to promote it, for the following reasons:
Focus on the Earth as one system
The name expresses the vision of humanity united in democratic responsibility for our shared planet.
Earth is one interconnected system of life. Its ecosystems, climate and natural resources transcend the political boundaries humanity has created. The health of the biosphere is a shared concern, and the consequences of human activity increasingly affect life across the planet.
Earth itself is our common home and the biological foundation of every human society. Our political identities and divisions exist within a single biosphere on which we all depend.
United Earth therefore expresses an ambition extending beyond human welfare alone: a civilisation that recognises its responsibility for the long-term well-being of Earth’s living systems and all forms of life.
Cultural resonance
The idea of a united Earth has long appeared in science fiction, literature and other cultural expressions, helping generations imagine humanity as a single planetary community.
This familiarity gives the name an immediate appeal. It evokes possibilities that many people already recognise, even if they have never considered how global democratic governance might actually be established.
The initiative seeks to turn this familiar vision into a practical political undertaking — one that people everywhere can examine, develop and help realise.
Strategic advantage
Building a global grassroots movement capable of achieving democratic geopolitical transformation requires a clear, compelling and widely recognisable common identity.
United Earth expresses the destination in two words. It is easy to understand, memorable across languages and broad enough to accommodate different political, cultural and philosophical perspectives.
We believe it offers a powerful shared name around which individuals, organisations and existing initiatives can unite in pursuit of global democracy, without requiring them to abandon their own identities or organisational independence.
The strategy is to build the successor to the United Nations system by establishing Earth Parliament as an independent, grassroots democratic institution. Once democratic legitimacy and the necessary constitutional foundations are established, the United Nations system can be repurposed within the new global political order, preserving and developing its valuable institutions under democratic global governance.
Transition beyond the United Nations
The name reflects the need to move beyond the outdated geopolitical condition of nation-state sovereignty and the structural limitations of the United Nations that follow from it. It signals the next step in humanity’s political evolution: from an international order of sovereign states to a democratic constitutional system for the whole Earth.
This transformation concerns political governance, not cultural identity. United Earth seeks to protect and celebrate the diversity of national, cultural and other identities, while establishing a democratic system in which political authority is independent of them.
